About James Captain
James D. Captain was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1934. His family moved to South Florida when he was a child. Growing up, James always acted as a positive role model for his younger brother, Tim Anagnost. James graduated from Miami Senior High School and attended the University of Miami, where he received a degree in Speech Correction. He went on to earn a master’s degree in Communication Disorders and Audiology from St. Thomas University.
James was a dedicated speech therapist in the Miami-Dade County Public Schools system for over three decades. Having worked with children all of his adult life, Mr. Captain was a very special man who always demonstrated kindness and compassion to the children he helped. Known for his patience and warmth, he left a lasting impression on countless students, families, and colleagues.
James also had a deep love for sports and was especially passionate about helping disadvantaged children in his community. He believed in the power of positive mentorship and access to opportunity—values that shaped both his career and his personal life.
James passed away in 2018 in Sarasota, Florida.
In 2018, James’s younger brother, Tim Anagnost, established the James Captain Memorial Scholarship at the Coral Gables Community Foundation to honor his legacy. The scholarship provides summer camp tuition assistance to in-need children from Coral Gables and Coconut Grove, offering them the chance to enjoy enriching and memorable experiences that might otherwise be out of reach. The goal is to give these children a safe, joyful environment to grow and learn—just as James always strove to provide.
Those who receive this scholarship are encouraged to emulate Mr. Captain’s qualities of kindness, compassion, and generosity.
