About the James Captain Memorial Scholarship

Scholarship Rules & Criteria:

  • The scholarship is only to be used toward summer camp tuition assistance
  • Recipients must be residents of Coral Gables or Coconut Grove
  • Recipients must possess a financial need
  • The scholarship may be awarded annually to up to two (2) children to attend summer camp
  • Only one applicant per family will be considered

 

Eligible Summer Camps for James Captain Memorial Scholarship:

  • City of Miami summer camp programs, for example
    • Camp at Virrick Park
    • Camp at Armbrister Park
  • City of Coral Gables camps, for example
    • Youth Center Camp
    • Tennis Camp at Kerdyk Tennis Center
    • Gymnastics Camp
  •  Shake-a-Leg Camp
  • Coral Gables Museum Camp
  • Coconut Grove Sailing Club Camp
  • University of Miami summer camps, for example:
    • Frost School of Music
    • Mini Canes Sports Camp
    • Acting Camp

 

Value of Scholarship:

The value of the scholarship typically varies from $1,000 to $3,000 based on the cost of selected camp. Checks are sent directly from the Coral Gables Community Foundation to the recipient’s camp of choice.

 

Application Requirements:

  • Completed application
  • Short Essay: Who is James Captain and what does he mean to you? How do you demonstrate kindness to others? To be completed by parent or guardian if necessary.
  • A Letter of Recommendation from any of the following: teacher, counselor, coach, mentor and/or supervisor in a job or service project.
  • Personal statement of Financial Need. To be completed by parent or guardian if necessary
