El Fondo de Becas Beyond the Bag brinda asistencia educativa y de matrícula a los hijos o dependientes menores de los empleados de Plantain Products Company (Chifles®). Establecida en 2024 por la familia Rivas, esta beca honra a los hombres y mujeres que trabajan duro en Chifles. El premio tiene como objetivo eliminar barreras y crear nuevas oportunidades, ayudando a los estudiantes a alcanzar su máximo potencial tanto en el aula como fuera de ella.
Criterios y elegibilidad de la beca:
- El beneficiario debe ser hijo o dependiente menor de un empleado de tiempo completo de Chifles®
- El solicitante debe solicitar el programa de becas Step Up for Students si es aceptado en la escuela de su hijo o dependiente
- El empleado debe volver a presentar la solicitud antes del 1 de abril de cada año
Valor de la beca
El valor de esta beca es de hasta $12,500 anuales para la matrícula y $12,500 anuales para los gastos relacionados con la escuela. Los pagos de la beca se pueden enviar directamente a la escuela receptora destinada a la matrícula de un estudiante en particular o pagarse directamente a los padres. La parte correspondiente a los gastos relacionados con la educación se pagará directamente a los padres.
Mantenimiento de la beca
Para mantener la beca, el beneficiario debe volver a presentar la solicitud cada año antes del 1 de abril, mantener la inscripción a tiempo completo en la escuela y obtener la beca Step-Up for Students si la institución la acepta.
Si el beneficiario utiliza la beca para pagar la matrícula y los gastos relacionados calificados, el dinero de la beca debe excluirse de los impuestos según la Sección 117. Sin embargo, los gastos que no se requieren como condición para la inscripción en la escuela probablemente no se puedan excluir de los ingresos. Es responsabilidad del beneficiario determinar si cualquier monto recibido debe declararse como ingreso sujeto a impuestos y debe comunicarse con su preparador de impuestos para esto.

Notas importantes:
- La recomendación del maestro para los grados K a 5 se basará en el formulario de Desarrollo del carácter del estudiante. Los estudiantes de los grados 6.º a 8.º y 9.º a 12.º deben obtener una carta de recomendación de un maestro.
- La selección de los beneficiarios de las becas es independiente del empleador y la decisión se basa completamente en factores que no están relacionados con el puesto o el desempeño del empleado.
- Las becas no se rescindirán. Por ejemplo, si el padre del estudiante termina su empleo en la empresa, el período de la beca ya otorgada no se cancelará.
The Beyond the Bag Scholarship Fund provides educational and tuition assistance to children or minor dependents of employees of Plantain Products Company (Chifles®). Established in 2024 by the Rivas Family, this scholarship honors the hard-working men and women at Chifles. The award aims to remove barriers and create new opportunities, helping students reach their full potential both in the classroom and beyond.

Value of Scholarship
The value of this scholarship is up to $12,500 annually for tuition and $12,500 annually for school related expenses. Scholarship payments can be sent directly to the recipient school earmarked for a particular student’s tuition or paid directly to the parent. The portion for education-related expenses will be paid directly to the parent.
Maintaining the Scholarship
In order to maintain the scholarship, the recipient must reapply each year by April 1, maintain full-time enrollment in school and obtain the Step-Up for Students Scholarship if accepted by the institution.
If the recipient uses the award to pay for qualified tuition and related expenses, the award monies should be excluded from tax under Section 117. However, expenses that are not required as a condition of enrollment in school are likely not excludable from income. It is the responsibility of the recipient to determine whether any amount received needs to be reported as taxable income and they should contact their tax preparer for this.

Important Notes:
- The teacher recommendation for grades K through 5 will be based on the Student Character Development form. Students in grades 6th through 8th and 9th through 12th must obtain a recommendation letter from a teacher.
- The selection of scholarship recipients is independent of the employer, and the decision is based entirely on factors that are not related to the employee’s position or performance.
- Awards won’t be rescinded. For example, if the parent of the student terminates employment with the company, the scholarship period already awarded won’t be withdrawn.
